Cognitive Rehabilitation

What is Cognitive Rehabilitation?

Cognitive rehabilitation therapy is a broad term used to describe treatment for a wide array of cognitive problems (i.e. difficulty with thinking abilities, attention, memory, language, etc.). Cognitive rehabilitation enhances functioning and independence in those with cognitive difficulties, as well as assisting with community reintegration, and supporting family members and care teams.

Are You Experiencing Moderate
to Severe Memory Problems?

Utilizing evidence-based memory interventions, cognitive rehabilitation therapy is typically provided for individuals who have suffered a brain injury, usually as a result of moderate to severe traumatic brain injury or stroke. Treatment is designed around the individual needs of each client and their cognitive difficulties. Thus, the length of treatment will vary from person-to-person. Sessions span one hour and incorporate one-to-one training utilizing internal memory strategies (i.e. associations, spaced repetition, errorless learning) and external memory aids (i.e. smartphones).

Are You Experiencing Problems with Attention or Executive Function?

Goal Management Training

Goal Management Training (GMT) is a validated, structured, 9-week group program, for rehabilitation of executive functions, including planning, problem solving, decision making, and self-monitoring. It has been shown to be effective in enhancing executive skills and promoting functional ability in those who have suffered a brain injury or present with a neurological condition. GMT is designed around how the brain works and how it connects to our ability to do things. This cognitive rehabilitation program teaches participants strategies that they can use in their daily lives, improving their ability to achieve goals by sustaining their attention, staying focused, formulating realistic plans, and organizing, prioritizing, and completing tasks in a timely fashion.

Our Approach to Cognitive Rehabilitation

Each person will uniquely experience a neurological condition. The form of rehabilitation (stroke recovery program or concussion rehabilitation) depends on the type and severity of the cognitive problem and how it impacts a person’s daily life. While a neuropsychological assessment helps characterize such problems, an interview-based assessment can also help determine treatment suitability and guide treatment-specific goals. Treatment involves active participation and is done in collaboration with your Calgary psychologist and brain health specialist.
